Spike Milligan, famous British comedian, actor and member of the Goons, died in February 2002 of liver failure. He was buried near to his home at St Thomas's Church, Winchelsea, East Sussex. His headstone proved contentious as he wanted his epitaph to be "I told you I was ill." However this caused problems and was eventually settled, to the satisfaction of the Diocese of Chichester, by having the inscription written in Gaelic. (Spike Milligan was of Irish decent and held an Irish passport.) Controversy surrounding the headstone did not end there. In 2011 his third wife, Shelagh Sinclair, died and her family wanted her buried in the same plot and her name and an epitaph written on the headstone. One of Spike's children, James Milligan, objected and threatened legal action.The headstone was removed and returned 6 months later, an inscription having been agreed by both families. This image was taken soon after Christmas. I do not know whether the wreath was a Christmas wreath or not. He died on 27the February 2002 and was buried on 8th March 2002.
