Southport is a resort and a half, with a different but equally exciting atmosphere to Blackpool. It's famous for its shops - if that's your bag! - speciality, designer and more all set in the midst of some pretty eccentric Victorian architecture. The miles of sandy beach (you'll need your binoculars to see the sea when the tides out!) is crowned by a magnificent promenade which is now dotted with sculptures which form part of the seawall display. If you get bored with running up credit card bills, why not get hold of the Southport Town Trail leaflet from the tourist info point and take in the endless list of listed buildings, dating as far back as the 1820s and inspiration for many a Paris boulevard and American city. Southport was once world renowned as a 'high class' seaside resort. Well worth taking the time to delve into it's history after you've been 'traumertized' at Pleasureland. The sea, however, saw Southport and fled (said one blackpool wag apparently). The sea started to retreat at Southport in the late nineteenth century - good news for the birds though.
