The Fiore di pietra restaurant is a work of architect Mario Botta. The archistar Botta designed the building and interior. The structural analysis is by The civil engineering firm Brenni Engineering AG; the gastronomic concept is by FIP Studio Fischli SA. The construction was performed under challenging logistical conditions at about 1700 m of altitude. The building houses a luxury restaurant and a self-service restaurant, conference rooms, presentation rooms, toilets and panoramic terrace. The civil engineering firm Brenni Engineering AG was commissioned for the structural analysis and the architectural office Marzio Giorgetti Architetti SA entrusted with coordinating and managing the construction project on site, performed under challenging logistical conditions at 1, 700 m of altitude. FIP Studio Fischli SA devised the gastronomic concept and planned the catering and production areas of the two restaurants in the building. Monte Generoso is a karstic mountain, 1704 meters high, between Italy and Switzerland. Since 1890 it can be reached by rack and pinion railway (Abt system) from Capolago, San Nicolau, Bellavista up to the summit; the railway is 9 km long and is now electrified but the original steam locomotive is preserved and is used for historical events or by special reservation. Nearby there are several places of speleological and anthropological interest, like the bear's cave. The vegetation is interesting and includes trees, grass and some native flowers. The animals that live here are many: goats, sheep, cows, chamois, foxes and numerous species of birds including the imperial raven.Just before the summit stands the panoramic restaurant Fiore di Pietra, designed by architect Mario Botta. Nearby there is also a small astronomical observatory open to the public upon reservation. The panorama is breathtaking and ranges from the Swiss Alps in the North to the Tuscan-Emilian Italian Apennines in the South; Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore are also visible.
