View NE of the site of Farley Heath Romano-Celtic temple, Surrey, England, UK, after excavation & backfilling in summer 1995. In the course of illegal metal detecting over 200 holes had been dug destroying the stratigraphy & context of the stolen finds: the excavation was to clear the site of finds & salvage any remaining archaeological details. The site had been partially excavated in 1848, 1926 & 1939. Within a walled polygonal temenos (sacred precinct) a tower cella (inner temple chamber) 6m square internally with an entrance facing E was surrounded by an ambulatory of four verandas with columns. Apposing corners of the temple & its ambulatory are marked by modern concrete slabs (rear centre & R). The temple was built in the C1stAD & remained in use into the early C5th when it was destroyed by fire. Many votive objects including weapons, tools & coins were deposited which made this Scheduled Ancient Monument a target for treasure hunters.
