View NE of the Turoe Stone La Tène decorated Celtic stone pillar, Loughrea, Co Galway, Republic of Ireland. The finest example in Europe of a series of ritual stones decorated with Early Celtic Art. The granite boulder has been dressed into the shape of a domed pillar around 1.68m high, it has Celtic curvilinear ornament in relief above a Greek step-pattern. Motifs, some in positive & negative forms, include trumpet-ends, triskeles & stylized animal heads. The patterns are laid out in four parts with two triangles & two conjoined shield shapes facing each other. The designs may have been painted in different colours. The stone is situated on a lawn opposite Turoe House at Bullaun N of Loughrea, it originally stood several miles away beside the Rath of Feerwore Iron Age ringfort. There is a similarly decorated Iron Age stone at Castlestrange in the neighbouring county of Roscommon.
