Amalienborg is the center of Frederiksstaden, a district built by Frederik d. V to commemorate in 1748 the centenary of the Oldenburg family´s ascension to the throne of Denmark and in 1749 the century for the coronation of Christian I of Denmark. This development is generally believed to have been the heart child of the Danish Ambassador to Paris, Johan Hartwig Ernst Bernstorf. The leader of the project was Lord High Steward Adam Gottlob Moltke, he was one of the country´s most powerful and influential men with Nicolai Eigtved as the Royal architect and supervisor. Frederiksstaden is built on two former palaces and was named Sophie Amalienborg. Queen Sophie Amalie, Frederik the 3rd queen, on a part of the land that her father-in-law Christian d IV had acquired outside Copenhagen´s old town, now known as the inner city district, in the 17th century, where he had been king. On April 15, 1689, Sophie Amalie´s son, Christian d V, celebrated his 40th birthday with the performance of German opera. The evening was a great success, but during the performance one of the decorations burns. This fire breathes the whole palace which in a very short time burns all the way to the ground, about 180 people lose their lives. It is therefore on this site that the current Amalienborg is built. First to noble people, later it becomes the home of the Royal Family.
