Riverdance was a Roll-On Roll-Off ferry, in service with Seatruck Ferries on the Irish Sea, operating between Heysham, Lancashire, and Wareenpoint, Northern Ireland. At 19.30, 31 January 2008, the ship was broadsided by a storm wave, which caused the cargo to shift. At 19.45 the Captain issued a Mayday call. The ship was listing at 60 degrees. At 22.00 hours 8 people were airlifted from the ferry. One engine was lost and Riverdance drifted aground at Anchorsholme, south of Cleveleys. The wreck was near the remains of the Abana, wrecked in 1894. Six crew members were taken off the ship after it had run aground. Remaining crew members were evacuated in the early hours of 1 February 2008. The salvage operation began with the aim of refloating the vessel. After being hit by bad weather and storm waves early in March 2008, it was decided to scrap the ship. Hancock's Contractors of Heysham were awarded the dismantling contract. By 10 October 2008 the wreck was reduced to the level of the beach. Built in 1977, and after several names and owners, the ship was bought by Seatruck in 1997, the ship being re-named Riverdance in 1996. The ferry had a length of 116.37 metres (381 feet 7 inches); a beam of 18.22 metres (59 feet 9 inches); a draught of 5.30 metres (17 feet 8 inches); a speed of 15 knots; a capacity to carry 12 passengers and 65 trucks; a crew of 19; a 6041 gross tonnage; and prep;sion from two diesel engines. For ten weeks in 2008 the Riverdance Wreck was a big tourist attraction in the Cleveleys area.
