Radley, Oxfordshire, England - 12 August 2020 You can find abstract beauty or interesting shapes just about anywhere, if you just look hard enough. And you don't need to go half way around the world, either... see, for instance, this fallen tree fungus found on one of my daily walks a stone's throw from my home in Radley Village, Oxfordshire. The clue to identification was the tree beneath which I found it - a lovely birch. A quick search showed this to be Fomitopsis betulina, commonly known as the birch polypore, birch bracket, or razor strop, which is a common bracket fungus which grows almost exclusively on birch trees. The brackets burst out from the bark of the tree, but this one was evidently too heavy and fell to the ground - where it was eaten rather rapidly!
