The museum exhibit includes four people who were buried around 1475 outside the Qilakitsoq settlement near Uummannaq. In the two graves were six women and two boys, three generations with close familial ties. The causes of death are unknown, but the people presumably died at the same time in the autumn, shortly after arrival at the winter settlement. They were wrapped in fur and fully dressed, with extra furs and costumes for a safe journey and a good life in the land of the dead. The five oldest women have almost the same facial tattoos, which indicate both kinship and social status. The youngest woman, who is around 20 years old, has no tattoos; maybe she was unmarried or had no children. On and among the costumes were amulets, used by the Inuit to get strength and for protection against evil forces.
