The Prudhoe Bay Oil Fields are located on the North Slope of Alaska. Flanked to the east by ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Reserve) and NPRA (National Petroleum Reserve Alaska) to the west, this region is one of the most prolific oil production regions in the world. This photograph is taken in the fall, before winter sets in. The surface of the permafrost melts and the tundra flourishes during the short summer months. The melting forms shallow lakes, which are natural occurrences. Major oil companies, such as Conoco Phillips, Exxon Mobile, and BP have major production facilities here. The Prudhoe Bay Oil Field covers over 213 thousand acres.The oil is transported to the south end of Alaska over the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and terminates in Valdez, Alaska.
