Praza das Praterías, Cathedral, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. The Praza das Praterías is a public square in the heart of Santiago de Compostela's old town. The square is named after the Praterías, a group of merchants, tailors, and goldsmiths who set up their stores here in the Middle Ages and provided supplies for the pilgrims traveling along the Way of St James. The square is bordered by the beautiful Gothic facades of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and two other monumental buildings, the Palácio de Rajoy and the Concello. The Praza das Praterías is a vibrant hub of activity, especially in the early evenings when locals stroll through the square enjoying the night air and patrons sit at the terraces and bars found here. Many cultural events are hosted in the square throughout the year, ranging from concerts to traditional markets and Christmas lights. The square is also home to a statue of Santiago El Mayor, the patron saint of Spain and the city of Santiago de Compostela.
