Plaza Lavalle or Place Lavalle is one of the main squares of the city of Buenos Aires , capital of Argentina. It is located in the neighborhood of San Nicolás except for its northern edge, which is part of the Retiro neighborhood. It has the shape of an elongated rectangle, the axis of which is oriented south-north. It is surrounded by the arteries Calle Lavalle (to the south), Avenida Córdoba (to the north), Calle Talcahuano (to the west) and Calle Libertad (to the east). The plaza is made up of 3 blocks, or manzanas (islets) of more than one hectare. Its area, from facade to facade, exceeds 40, 000 square meters (4 hectares). In the vicinity of the square are several historical, administrative or cultural sites of the city. The Plaza Lavalle is crossed from east to west by two major streets; Calle Viamonte to the north and Calle Tucumán to the south.
