Pinal county Arizona USA. 3/16/2024. Arizona’s Pinal County offers home to some 13, 000 sheep. In the early- to mid-1940s, there were about 50 sheep ranching companies in Arizona. Today, only 3 family owned remain- Auza Sheep Company, Manterola Sheep Company and the Joe Auza Jr. Sheep Company. By June 1, the sheep herders take about 45 days — three to four miles a day — to walk/truck the sheep to a cooler place like Flagstaff from Cordes Junction to the south. During the summer months, they stay cool and breed in pastures up north and are taken back to Casa Grande beginning around the end of October. Navajo-Churro sheep do well in arid Arizona.
