The Pikeing Well is one of several springs along the east bank of the River Ouse on New Walk, a promenade established in the 1730s. architect John Carr (1723-1807) designed the building, using limestone and recycled masonry including a broken C12 capital used as a finial. New Walk was extended making the well more accessible and in 1756 York Council built this wellhouse, with a central reservoir surrounded by stone seats, for people wanting to take the waters. rebuilt in 1858 by Thomas Pickersgill
