A Southern Pacific GP9R locomotive heads up a local freight in Petaluma, California in 1989. Locomotives such as these were mostly relegated to local and branch line freight service by this time. The Southern Pacific was poised to merge with the Santa Fe Railroad during this period, however, the merger was not approved by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Eventually the Southern Pacific was acquired by the Union Pacific and the Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad to become the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. The pictured locomotive was painted in the Southern Pacific's desert paint scheme though many mainline units had been converted to a new paint scheme in anticipation of the merger with Santa Fe.
