This photograph was taken of a peruvian pelican just as he landed on the quayside of arica harbour Peruvian Pelicans Pelecanus thagus are close cousins of the Brown Pelican They can be found along the western South American coast from from Lobos de Tierra Island in Peru to Pupuya Islet in Chile These pelicans can be found in salt water bays beaches and shallow estuaries These shallow waters assist them with the plunge diving technique they use to catch the fish they eat Peruvian Pelicans are especially hard hit during El Nino related periods The anchovies on which they feast head for cooler and deeper waters severely affecting the food supply of these pelicans These birds are especially important in Peru since they are the third most important guano producing seabird
