The Cumbre Vieja is essentially a large stratovolcano forming the high ridge which defines the topography of southern La Palma. The volcano is highly active, the last eruption occurring in 1971 at Teneguia in the south-west. Eruptions occur not through a cental crater or caldera but through numerous smaller cones on the ridge and around its edges.
