Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy: long portico included by Giorgio Vasari (1511 - 1574) in his design for the 1573 Palazzo delle Logge, also known as the Logge Vasari, on the north side of Piazza Grande, also known as Piazza Vasari. On the 6th of July 1570, the deans of the Fraternita dei Laici requested Cosimo I de Medici for a new public building for Piazza Grande. On the 19th July 1572, Giorgio Vasari was appointed by the Fraternita to design the so-called “Palazzo delle Logge”. Construction started on the 27th of January 1573, but Vasari died the year after and the palace was finished by Alfonso and Giulio Parigi in 1595. Giorgio Vasari was one of the foremost artists of 16th century Italy, renowned not only as a painter, draftsman, and architect, but also as the author of Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, a series of artist biographies that formed the basis for modern art history. He was born in Arezzo to a family of craftsmen and undertook artistic training in Florence under the care of the ruling Medici family. In the last decade of his life, Vasari worked for both the Duke of Florence and in Rome for Pope Pius V. In 1569, the Pope commissioned him to decorate several chapels in the Vatican, work for which Vasari was later awarded a knighthood. The Piazza Grande is venue for Arezzo’s world-famous monthly Antiques Fair and also the Giostra del Saracino (Saracens’ Joust), a jousting tournament celebrating 16th century struggles with Saracen pirates.
