In the interior of the Neue Wache building in Berlin, Germany there is only one artistic exhibit. It is this sculpture by Käthe Kollwitz entitled Mother with her Dead Son. The Neue Wache building has an oculus in the roof - like the Parthenon in Rome - that allows in the rain, snow, wind. The exposed statue is intended to symbolise the suffering endured by civilians during war. Kollwitz lost a son to the First World War and a grandson to the Second World War. Her sympathies were with the proletariat or working people and her art was banned by the Nazis as “degenerate”. Ironically one of her works of a Mother and Child was adopted for Nazi propaganda.
