This mosaic by the artist Piero Dalle Ceste was created in 1953 and depicts the assumption of Mary. It adorns the façade of the sanctuary of Crea, located on the sacred mountain of Crea in Monferrato, province of Alessandria, region of Piedmont (Italy). Piero Dalle Ceste (Refrontolo, 1912 – Turin, 1974) was an Italian artist, active mainly in Piedmont. He was born in Refrontolo in 1912 in the province of Treviso, Veneto, in a time of hard years. In 1918 his father died and he began his education in institutions for orphans, first in Veneto then in Turin at the Albertina Academy where he later obtained a chair. Still a child, he already possessed the technical tools of art. In 1933 his old parish priest asked him for a painting to replace the Madonna del Rosario of Palma il Giovane, ruined by the bombings. From that day many ecclesiastical institutions turned to him for many works of sacred art including altarpieces, paintings, frescoes, mosaics and stained-glass; but he also made realism and post-impressionist works including portraits, landscapes and still life. He worked in over 150 sacred places including sanctuaries, churches and chapels. He said of himself: «When I paint and then look at my paintings I feel a spiritual relief, I understand that I am alive». The Marian sanctuary of Crea occupies a large part of the Sacred Mount of Crea, a hill in the Crea Natural Park, established in 1980, with a woods of ash, oak, turkey oaks, lilies, beeches pines and violets and primroses flowers. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003. In addition to the main church houses the 5 hermitages and 23 chapels of the devotional path that winds through the woods from the sanctuary up to the top of the hill, guest houses, bars and restaurants. On summit of the hill is located the Chapel of Paradise. The history of this sanctuary is very ancient. It began in the Middle Ages with the construction of the church of Santa Maria, already a place of pilgrimage.
