Department for Transport, Horseferry Road, London, UK. 27th April 2016. A Stop Killing Cyclists Transport Pollution Die-In protest is held outside the Department for Transport in central London. The demonstrators are calling for urgent action to eliminate transport pollution and to condemn the UK government's actions, which they claim, over the last year have deliberately destroyed progress towards reducing the horrific death and disease toll from transport pollution. Many demonstrators wore masks together with children's dolls and teddy bears brought along to represent children's infected lungs. In Parliament earlier today the House of Commons environment, food and rural affairs committee reported on air quality stating that "urgent government action is needed to stop up to 50, 000 people a year dying early from air pollution-related illnesses". The report presses for new clean air zones in dozens of English towns and cities to cut the risk of cardiac, respiratory and other diseases caused by polluted air. Defra plans new clean air zones for five of the most polluted cities but MPs say more is needed to cut the health and environmental impacts of pollutants, including particulates and nitrogen dioxide.
