The Torre del Gallo (Tower of the Rooster) is a historical building located at Pian de' Giullari, on top of a hill of Arcetri, overlooking the city of Florence. In ancient times it was part of a real castle on a hill strategically close to Florence, belonged, according to some historians, to the Galli family (or Gallo), which was of very ancient origin and of which remains a stone coat of arms next to a plaque in gothic characters located on one of the walls of the ancient courtyard. Taking advantage of the position, the family demanded a toll from those who went down to Florence coming from Impruneta. Today’s appearance of the tower, however, is the result of a restoration in neo-medieval style carried out between 1904 and 1906 by the antiquarian Stefano Bardini, which purchased the Tower in 1902. There remained of the fifteenth-century system a courtyard with three loggias (some attributed to Brunelleschi), while as for the external building and the tower it was a real reconstruction, although ancient materials were used as much as possible.
