A closer look to the life of the local communities in Dampier Strait, Raja Ampat archipelago Community elders in Raja Ampat archipelago gave "a mandate" to the head of the regency's officials to declare the establishment of six local marine protected areas in six different regions in the West Papua's remote regency by late 2006. "It's a new approach here, conservation areas were built under local community's initiatives, " said Sjafri, an Indonesia's official responsible for community-based management in Dampier Strait—one of the local marine protected areas, during a conversation in July 2007. "The previously established conservation areas, which are terrestrial, are not effective since they were established without the active involvement of local communities, " he added. Besides the celebrated protected areas, there are a number of smaller, scattered marine protection zones established near the coastal villages. The natives then manage to run them traditionally. "Community elders have important roles. They reacted by establishing some more protected areas close to their villages, for the security of food source, " said Feronika Manohas, a facilitator-trainer. An equivalent to Amazon's rich terrestrial biodiversity; the marine, underwater biodiversity of Raja Ampat archipelago is celebrated by nature scientists as the world's richest. Its underwater sites are a dream-destination for diving enthusiasts. It is also an indispensable food source for most of the inhabitants who are living subsistencely. Besides awareness programs on species that need to be protected, facilitators and trainers have been trying to assist through alternative, sustainable methods for the local communities to increase their incomes: from aquaculture to merchandise creation. However, marketing is another obstacle. Inhabited islands in Raja Ampat archipelago are scattered, and are distanced—several hours to more than half day of sea journey—with Sorong, the capital of West Papua province.
