Jane Austen was born in the old rectory at Steventon on 16 December 1775 and formally christened in the church the following April. She spent most of the following 25 years living here. Her father, Rev George Austen, was the rector of Steventon and the neighbouring parish of Deane for 40 years until his death in 1805 although his son, James took over his duties from 1801 when he retired to Bath with his wife and daughters Including Jane. The church is the only building in Steventon that remains from Jane Austen's lifetime and is essentially the same except for the addition of a small spire and a slight Victorian makeover inside, To the left of the door is an ancient yew tree that has hollowed out trunk. In Jane Austen's time, the large, iron church key was kept hidden in the trunk until it went missing in the late Victorian period.
