Situated in the South Atlantic, South Georgia was once the domain of whalers and sealers but is now home to thousands of King Penguins, Elephant Seals and Fur Seals Sir Earnest Shackleton famously traversed the mountainous and glaciated island to rescue his men trapped on Elephant Island and his grave is at the former whaling station of Grytviken where there is also a small museum and post office popular with cruise ships.The BAS base at King Edward Point is a short stroll around the bay and staff here were forcibly removed by the Argentinians during the Falklands War.
