KALI WORSHIP FIRE WALKING, 11 - 12 MARCH 2011 THE KALI TEMPLE MOUNT EDGCOMBE DURBAN. The Temple Society of the Kali Temple in Siphosenthu Road Mount Edgcombe celebrated their annual fire walking ceremony in the Honour of the Goddess Kali the wife of Lord Shiva of the Hindu Faith. The ceremony involves fasting, the presentations of offerings and the act of fire walking across a bed of hot coals in honour of "the mother figure". This is in the thanks for provision of intervention in the lives of the devotees, and, request for intervention on behalf of the devotee. The ceremony then involves a period of fasting on the part of the devotee where he or she will put aside the things of the flesh in the lead up to a gathering at the temple where prayers and offerings are offered to the goddess. Many flags will be raised at the front of the temple in honour of Kali. The Flag hoisting ceremony is then followed be the colourful fire walking ceremony where as the sun sets and in the red glow of the bed of coals the the participating devotees gather together in traditional Hindu style and to the beating of drums, singing and the clash of symbols prepare themselves for the crossing of the bed of red hot coals. The devotees gather at the edge of the fire pit and one by one they dance, walk and run across the coals to the appeasement of Kali. Though the ceremony is one of fire, frenzied chanting and drumming with many devotees moving into a trance in preparation of the fire, the duality of Hindu faith comes across in the balance of the Goddess Kali seen as the mother figure and a ultimate source of strength too... The ceremony is a social attraction in the community where friends and family of the devotee will gather around the participants in support of their attempt...
