Illustration from Cassell's History of England, pub circa 1905. After a photo by the London Stereoscopic company (ceased trading 1922). John Redmond achieved the passing of the Irish Home Rule Act, but implementation was suspended by outbreak of First World War. He called on the Irish Volunteers to join Irish regiments of British Army, to support the British war effort. The Irish volunteers split, creating Irish national Volunteers who served in the Army and nationalists who wished to remain neutral who retained the original name of Irish volunteers. The Irish volunteers contained elements of the Irish republican brotherhood & Sinn Fein which ultimately led to the Easter Rising of 1916.
