Jet is a product of high-pressure decomposition of wood, , commonly the wood of trees of the family Araucaria aruacana. Jet is found in two forms, hard and soft. Hard jet is the result of carbon compression and salt water; soft jet is the result of carbon compression and fresh water. The hard jet found in sea cliffs near Whitby is of early Jurassic origin about 182 million years ago and is the fossilized wood from species similar to the Chile pine or Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana). Jet has been used in Britain on and off since the Neolithic period, losing popularity after the end of Roman Britain but seeing a resurgeance in the Victorian era when Queen Victoria wore Whitby jet jewelry as part of her mourning dress after the death of Prince Albert. It has been traditionally fashioned into rosaries for monks..Jet is found in short individual seams unlike coal. It is randomly distributed throughout the shales known as the upper lias. This band of rock is around 20 feet thick and lies above an iron stone stratum and below a thin band of limestone known as the Top Jet dogger.
