Grand Central Terminal is a terminal station at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States. Built and named by the New York Central Railroad in the heyday of long-distance rail in the United States, it is the largest train station in the world by number of platforms, 44, with 67 tracks throughout the station. There are two levels, both underground, with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower level. When the new Long Island Railroad station opens below existing levels (see East Side Access), Grand Central Station will have a total of 75 tracks and 48 platforms. Its brick vaults patented by Rafael Guastavino, called "the Architect of New York", are characteristic.
