Dover Western Docks as seen from Dover's Western Heights, The Docks in years gone by was the gateway to Europe for rail and foot passengers, formerly also the dock's hovercraft and catamaran port. Today the Eastern Docks (not visible in this image) have the honour of the busiest passenger port in the world. The long building seen to the rear of the white building housed the Eastern Docks Rail station where trains known as Boat Trains would off load passengers bound for France and take on passengers entering England. The Golden Arrow and boat trains arrived here non-stop from London. Today the Western Docks is home and stopping off point to a marina, small cargo ships and cruse liners. As can be seen in this image, France 22 miles across the channel on a clear day is visible. We can make out Calais and the cliffs to the right of the town. Between Dover and Calais are the Straits of Dover, reported to be the busiest international seaway in the world, used by over 400 commercial vessels daily.
