Great Falls Park, a site that is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, is an 750 acre park located along the Potomac. River 14 miles upriver from Washington DC. The Great Falls are the most spectacular natural landmark in the Washington DC metropolitan area. The falls consist of several 20ft waterfalls with a total drop of 77 ft. It is the most spectacular fall line rapids system in any eastern US river. Each year, about 3 million people visit this series of rapids and cascades along the Potomac River. The site is particularly popular among hikers, climbers, and kayakers. According to statistics there are 7 deaths on average from drowning in the park area and its vicinity.
