The Grand Canyon is a huge steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River over millions of years exposing nearly two billion years of geologic history. The area has been continuously in habited by Native Americans who built settlements and many of whom consider the canyon a holy place. President Theodore Roosevelt visited in 1903 and later designated the Grand Canyon as a National Park. Despite opposition from land and mining claim holders, it was designated a National Park in 1919 under President Woodrow Wilson. It is interesting that some of the peaks are high enough that a photo looks like it was taken from an airplane (or a drone). Cool!
