A garden statue or monument of the Spanish explorer to the New World, Christopher Columbus was received by Spain‚the first King and Queen, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile in the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, also known as the Alcazar of Cordoba, is a medieval palace/ fortress in the historic centre of Cordoba in Andalusia, southern Spain. The Alcazar of Cordoba became a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1994, the fourth listed site for any city in the world. The others in Cordoba are the Mosque-Cathedral (1984), the historical quarter surrounding the Mosque/ Cathedral (1994) the Festival of the Patios (Courtyards) (2012) and Medina Azahara (2018). The well-preserved Alcazar of Cordoba with its long gardens is a few minutes walk to the Mosque-Cathedral, and next to the Guadalquivir River. The palace became the residence of the first King and Queen of Spain, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, who were the first monarchs which led to the unification of Spain in 1469.
