The Thai public holiday of Chulalongkorn Day celebrates the life and work of King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V, who ruled Thailand for 42 years from 1868 to 1910. The holiday is celebrated on 23 October, the day that he passed away in 1910 at the age of 57. It is a national holiday in Thailand known in Thai as "Wan Piyamaharaj Day". King Chulalongkorn is cherished in Thailand as a great king who enacted major modernising reforms and exercised skill in fending off the threat of European colonialism. To honour the monarch each year, people, businesses and institutions place elaborate memorial wreaths around his equestrian statue in Royal Plaza, Dusit district, Bangkok. Many Thais come to show respect for the great king with Buddhist prayers and offerings.
