Detail of wet rocks and coastal, landscape view of Bucks Mills beach, near Clovelly, on a winter’s day with a clear blue sky. This colourful image shows the exposed pebbled beach, still wet, as the Atlantic ocean tide starts to drop. The beach faces north and is in the shadow of the cliff. The footpath leads down to the beach and behind is the old lime kiln and cliff top houses. Detail also of the North Devon coastline and Bideford Bay, taken at high tide looking towards Westward Ho! Access to this beach is by the steep path, which leads down from the village. Local history suggests that survivors from the Spanish Armada settled here marrying the local women. It was an isolated village with the residents being self sufficient on agriculture and fishing. Lime was burned in the old lime kilns, which date from 1760. Bucks Mills is now a popular destination for tourists, who enjoy the beach, South West coastal path and surrounding woodlands.
