Enterobacteriaceae bacteria, computer illustration, 360 degree panorama. These are Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria. The family Enterobacteriaceae includes the genera Escherichia, Shigella, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Yersinia, Citrobacter, and Enterobacter. Some of these bacteria cause diarrheal infections (Salmonella, Shigella). Others are representatives of the normal microbiome of the intestines and other organs (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp.), but can also cause disease in certain locations (surgical wound infection, urinary tract infection) or in case of decreased immunity (pneumonia in postoperative patients).
