A uniformed railwayman at his railside hut in the countryside on the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LTSR), Essex, England, UK c.1910. The equipment here consists of switch-gear and levers to allow the worker to manually operate points and signals on the line. The London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LTSR) is a commuter railway line on the British railway system which connects London's Fenchurch Street station with destinations in east London and Essex. Its main users are London commuters but there are leisure travellers, as the line serves a number of seaside resorts. The route also includes freight traffic to and from the port of Tilbury. The railway was authorised in 1852 and the first section was opened in 1854 by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway Company. The main line runs from Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness via Basildon and Southend. A loop line between Barking and Pitsea provides an alternative route via Grays and Tilbury. It was electrified in stages from 1949. Passenger services are currently operated by train operating company c2c - an old Victorian/Edwardian photograph.
