A relative uses a hammer to break the rusty lock of the cage where Hong Zhengqu, right, a mentally-disturbed man has been locked up for eight years, at home in Baisha Village, Dongshi Town, Jinjiang city, southeast Chinas Fujian province, 18 February 2014. A man named Hong in Fujian province was recently sent to a sanatorium after he had been locked in a cage by his family for eight years. Around eight years ago, Hong, who is mentally unstable, began hurting people after his wife and child ran away from home. Not able to afford proper care, his mother put him in a cage, where she took care of him. Recently, however, she passed away. There is less than 10 square meters inside the single stone house where his one-square-meter cage is kept next to a window. Hong provoked neighbors by continually prying into their property and even allegedly injured his own mother. After his mother died, relatives intended to let Hong stay in the village to receive consultation and hospital treatment. Doctors who came to check on him, however, suggested that they find a nursing home for treatment.
