The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event that has taken place in London since 1966 on the streets of the Notting Hill area of Kensington, each August over two days (the August bank holiday Monday and the preceding Sunday. It is led by members of the British West Indian community, and attracts around two and a half million people annually, making it one of the world's largest street festivals. It includes a colourful, vibrant and energetic parade showing off beautiful costumes as the participants dance and perform to a range of Caribbean and South American influenced music including Soca, calypso, and reggae. There are also lots of steel pan bands, sound systems and live performances as well as tasty dishes from all over the Caribbean and many other countries worldwide. The procession bands also take part in an annual contest where their performance, and costumes are scored.
