One of 5 public automatic pay toilets in NYC. This one located at the Plaza of the Americas in morningside heights in Manhattan, and at the time of the photograph, out of order. In early 2000, nyc planned on installing at least 20 such toilets through a contract with Cemusa (today JCDecaux) but politics and bureaucracy have stymied the installation of the rest of the toilets now currently sitting in a warehouse. Pay toilets are currently banned across New York State in 1975 "a discriminatory tax on human biological functions." by Governor Carey with an exception given to the City of New York. A pay toilet ban across America began in 1969 with a campaign by California Assemblyperson March Fong Eu protesting against the misogyny of restrooms that charged entry fee for stalls, but not for urinals.
