An overhead view of 'HemisFair '68', an official World's Fair (Expo or International Exposition) held in San Antonio, Texas, USA in 1968. The photograph was taken from The Tower of the Americas. The waterway system with boats on snakes through the site as do two 'Mini-Monorail' trains. The HemisFair Arena is top right. 'HemisFair '68' ran from April 6 to October 6 1968. The theme of the fair was 'The Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas', celebrating the many nations which settled the region. More than thirty nations and fifteen corporations had pavilions at the fair. The theme character of the fair was a dragon named Luther. The fair was built on a 96.2-acre (389, 000 sq m) site on the south-eastern edge of downtown San Antonio. A monorail, named Mini-Monorail, connected pavilions on the site. The Tower of the Americas – the fair's theme structure – is this 750-foot-tall (228 m) tower, which remains today as San Antonio's tallest structure. The top of the tower houses a revolving restaurant and outdoor observation deck. It was designed by architect O'Neil Ford. HemisFair Arena (also known as Convention Center Arena) was the fair's indoor arena. It was later the home to the ABA/NBA's San Antonio Spurs. In 1986, many unused remaining structures built for the fair were removed. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of HemisFair '68, some parts of the site were redeveloped with cascading waterfalls, fountains, playgrounds and landscaping. Many of the improvements were concentrated near the base of the Tower of the Americas. In 1988 the site was re-branded as 'HemisFair Park', making the urban park a lasting legacy of the fair. In 2015, the San Antonio City Council re-named the area 'Hemisfair'. This image is from an old American amateur Kodak colour transparency. It will look slightly soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
