When the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks in Cahersiveen, County Kerry, was built in 1875 it was rumoured the plans had been mixed up with those of a similar building in the Punjab in India. A great story, but sadly not true, the architect, Enoch Trevor-Owen, just liked Scottish-Baronial architecture, indeed there's a similarly designed building at Ballyduff in County Waterford. Apart from maintaining law and order, the police also protected the transatlantic telegraph cable threatened during the defeated Fenian Rising of 1867. During the Irish Civil War, Cahersiveen was a republican stronghold and with the Free State Army encroaching, the residents didn't want such a commanding building falling into the hands of the army. Retreating ex-IRA men set fire to the Barracks in 1922, following which it remained a burnt out shell until 1991 when the Barracks were restored to its former glory and open it as a Heritage Centre.
