A local Chinese villager looks at dead fish floating on the Hejiang River, which is polluted by dangerous chemicals thallium and cadmium, in Hezhou city, south Chinas Guangxi Province, 9 July 2013. A river in southern China that is used as a drinking source has been found to be polluted with excessive amounts of the dangerous chemicals thallium and cadmium. The official Xinhua News Agency says authorities detected unsafe amounts of the substances in a section of the Hejiang River in Guangdong province after dead fish turned up in the water. Xinhua said on Saturday (6 July 2013) that the Fengkai county government has warned the local water plant and residents against using the water or eating anything from the river. Cadmium is considered an environmental hazard, and thallium is extremely toxic. Xinhua said the pollutants were believed to have come from upstream.
