The ceremony is a traditional education activity for children in China. Children donning traditional Chinese uniforms attend the First Writing Ceremony to start their first day of the semester at the Confucius Temple elementary school. The First Writing Ceremony, also called the Qi Meng (Enlightenment) Ceremony, was a very important ceremony for every student before they were admitted to school in ancient China. Teachers usually gave them a red dot on their forehead, a symbolic manner to inspire her wisdom. All the first-graders recited paragraphs of the Analects of Confucius, paid tribute to Confucius and knocked the enlightenment bell to celebrate the upcoming school year.
