A Chinese student browses online shops on his laptop computer and smartphone to prepare for the November 11 Singles' Day shopping spree before midnight in the dorm at Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan city, central China's Hubei province, 10 November 2014. China is gearing up for its annual online shopping spree in the name of Singles' Day. According to Nielsen statistics, more than 80% of Chinese online respondents were set on taking part in the event, which takes place November 11. Known as "11.11" for the connotations of aloneness attached to the number one, Singles' Day was launched in 2009 by the e-commerce giant Alibaba, which hosts sales on its websites Tmall.com, Taobao Marketplace, Juhuasuan, AliExpress and Tmall Global. The concept of the day is to encourage singletons to celebrate their solo status through online splurges. Last year's "festival" generated $5.8 billion in sales. The event has gone from strength to strength and around 27, 000 merchants and 42, 000 brands are expected to take part in the extravaganza this year.
