A car approaching a narrow arch in a street, two meters wide.-just enough space for small passing vehicles. High above are adjoining arches of Moorish architecture in a small medieval town of Arcos de la Frontera, one of the pueblos blancos (white villages), on hilltops throughout southeast Spain's Cadiz Sierra range. Arcos de la Frontera and its labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses leading up to a sandstone castle, Castillo de los Arcos, is situated on a rocky limestone 150 metre high ridge with panorama views of the snaking river Guadalete as it cuts its way in the surrounding countryside Arcos de la Frontera was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1962 in recognition of its exceptional Moorish architecture and impressive location. Although its time under the Moors was one of its most successful, Arcos has had a long history of occupation, as shown by the discovery of numerous archaeological remains from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Tartessian, Phoenician and Roman periods. Plentiful water and its superb defensive hilltop location were the main attractions for settlers.
