Donovan's Store, Okarito, Westland, New Zealand, was built in the 1860s as an hotel and converted to a General Store in the 1890s. It lasted 60+ years as a store. James Donovan and his wife Eva, ran the store for over 60 years. As well as serving the port of Okarito the store served the gold dredge workers and the flax cutters. Donovan was noted for delivering supplies to out of the way places. He sold the store in the 1950s to Keith Robertson and in 1987 he bequeathed it to The Historic Places Trust. The Trust passed the building to The Department of Conservation (DOC) and in 1990 the store was given Catagory 1 status signifying a building worth preserving. The local community decided to repair it and in 1994 DOC began a 5 year restoration programme. The Okarito Community Association contributed $100 000 towards the renovation. The hall is owned by the Community Association in partnership with DOC.
