This image was captured atop Fredonyer Peak in Lassen County, California, USA on September 1, 2021, as the Dixie Fire burned several miles away. The Dixie fire, at the time already above 800, 000 acres, is the largest single fire in recorded California history. Atop this 7949 foot peak is a United States Forest Service fire lookout (the land itself is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)). As this was still fairly early in the morning, atmospheric inversion had the smoke from the fire settled down in to lower areas. From the vantage point of the highest peak around this made for some striking layers and depth to the vista, even if I wish the destructive blaze never started. I felt this image, which was fairly “monochromatic” already looking roughtly toward the morning sun, begged for a black and white treatment.
