This 1891 illustration shows Oliver and Oakes Ames. Oakes Ames (1804-1873) was an American manufacturer, railroad promoter, and politician. He served as a US Congressman (1863-1873) and was involved in the Credit Mobilier scandal. His brother, Oliver Ames, , Jr. (1807-1877), was president of Union Pacific Railroad at the time the Central Pacific Railroad met the Union Pacific in Utah, completing the First Transcontinental Railroad in North America. The monument pictured here is known as the Ames Monument, which was designed by the famed U.S. architect Henry H. Richardson. It stands in Albany County in Wyoming. The monument marks the highest point (8, 247 feet) on the transcontinental railroad. Oakes and his brother Oliver Ames Jr. When the railroad tracks were rerouted, the town of Sherman near the monument became a ghost town.
