The Phoenix Queen is a swim ended flat bottom barge, known as a Lighter, though often also known as a London Barge. Before conversion to a houseboat The Phoenix Queen would have been an engineless steel hull, used to carry cargo. She worked out of Surrey Docks on The River Thames in London. Before the advance of technology lighters were rowed by Lighermen. Then later, after the industrial revolution in London, lighters were pulled by tugs. An increase in road transportation saw a decline in the docks and ports in London, and the use of the River Thames for transportation. Many lighters were sold off and scrapped, or converted into house barges, like The Phoenix Queen. She was built by Richard Dunston Ltd in 1962, and completed in the summer of that year. She was called Scone and her Yard number was T.1103. She was one of 15 Barges built for the Port of London Authority in that year, over a five month period. All were named with a five letter word beginning with 's'. Here is a list showing the names of all 15 of the barges. Scone appears 7th on this list below, which is from Archives of Richard Dunstan Ltd. When the current owners took her on, she was called Last Mariner. As part of the renaming ceremony in 2013 when she became The Phoenix Queen. A piece of paper with the name Last Mariner was tied to the hull at the waterline when the tide was out. This was printed in water-soluble ink. When the tide came in, the old name, Last Mariner was washed away to herald the new name, The Phoenix Queen. On the card you can see her original measurements, dock, and weights. He offical number is a also shown here and is also visible on the hull to this day. The Phoenix Queen's steel hull alone weighs 77.5 tonnes and is capable of carrying a weight of 160 tonnes.
